- the forest -


awakened by a dream I open my eyes
raise myself in bed and get up
with house slippers on my bare feet

I sneak downstairs to the door
and leave the house
the fog is so close and tight
as if he would never walk away
he covers the horizon

the leaves moan softly
under my warm slippers
I pull them out
a deer is standing in the yard
I see him in the silence of the night
he looks right back and
gives the same question back to me
I go to the gate, to the road
a deserted place
swallowed by the dark mist

the forest is silent
his teeth are long and thin
he stares and it seems that
they grin directly at me
his breath is mist
he squeezes it through his jaws to me
I walk a few steps toward him
he will swallow me
the forest
the mighty, the eternal beauty
the evil

the forest is not far, the road not long
the village is not large, my eyes not open
